Danfoss headquarters will reach carbon neutrality in 2022

Danfoss employs almost 28,000 people and serves customers in more than 100 countries.

Danfoss develops technologies that enable the world of tomorrow to do more with less. We meet the growing need for infrastructure, food supply, energy efficiency and climate-friendly solutions.

The Danfoss Green Restart initiative shows how we can accelerate the pace of economic recovery and generate sustainable growth in an energy-efficient way by working together towards a future without CO2 emissions.

The headquarters of the Danfoss member company in Nordborg, Denmark, will reach CO2 neutrality already next year. Among other things, the recovery of waste heat from data centers will help to achieve it. In 2024, excess heat from the company's own data center will provide a quarter of the energy for central heating. Digital transformation thus goes hand in hand with the transition to green economy. Also, Danfoss wants to achieve carbon neutrality in all of the company’s global operations at the latest by 2030.

In response to the exponential growth of data center energy consumption, Danfoss has decided to build data centers that can set an example in terms of minimal climate impact. It uses technology for greener cooling, reduces energy consumption and, above all, reuses excess heat.

Back in 2015, Danfoss headquarter campus was 100% heated by fossil fuels. Next year, it will be CO2 neutral. And in, 2024, the excess heat from Danfoss’ newly built data centers will contribute with 25% of the overall heat supply for 250,000 m2 of production and offices.

“The data centers of the future will be hybrid data centers where we combine the best of two worlds: the cloud and the on-site data center. And we utilize the excess heat in the energy grids close to where it is produced,” Danfoss CIO Sune T. Baastrup said. Danfoss is now transforming and consolidating 20 global data centers and 135 server rooms into several large centers which will all be built using these green technologies. "In less than half a year, we have managed to build our own climate-friendly data centers. We want to show that digital transfomration and green transition go hand in hand," he added.

Data centers consume a vast amount of energy to supply servers with power, but also to cool down server rooms. It is estimated that up to 10% of all electricity is used within IT systems. This makes reducing the climate impact of digitalization a high priority.

The decarbonization of data centers starts from the cooling side and Danfoss is a specialist in cooling. Danfoss has a wide portfolio and expertise to reduce direct and indirect CO2 emissions. These technologies include Danfoss Turbocor® coolers and heat pumps, which enable more efficient cooling of data centers by up to 30% and recovery of excess heat.

Energy efficiency, electrification and industry integration are key levers for the transformation of all industries and to help achieve our climate goals. Our development and production activities aim at the important goal of achieving carbon neutrality at Danfoss by 2030 at the latest.
