BREEAM is the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.
A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’s specification, design, construction and use. The measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.

There are no pre-qualification requirements to becoming a BREEAM International assessor. The only thing we stipulate is the need to have a very good understanding of written and spoken English. We do however have to state that the training is technical and therefore knowledge of the below areas would be advantageous:
The BREEAM International Training Course
To become a BREEAM International assessor you will need to have completed a three day training course. The first two days are the Foundation days (common to all non domestic versions of BREEAM) and the third day is the Top Up Day which is specific to BREEAM International.
The training course consists of lectures and workshop exercises. During the course you will work on case studies to help familiarise yourself with the BREEAM issues. At the end of the third day, you will be required to successfully complete a multi-choice exam and a homework case study exercise which you have 3 months to complete and submit.
Once you have become a qualified BREEAM International assessor, you are then eligible to apply for a BREEAM International Licence. There is no fee attached to the annual licence, you are however charged a lodgement fee per assessment registered.
Details of course dates and costs can be found on the Training and Events page.
What buildings can be assessed with this qualification?
Once you have completed the training and signed a licensing agreement with BRE Global, BREEAM International Assessors are able to: Carry out assessments for International BREEAM schemes such as BREEAM Gulf and the European schemes, Carry out Bespoke BREEAM assessments.
BREEAM In-Use is a new scheme to help building managers and owners reduce the running costs and improve the environmental performance of existing buildings.
The scheme uses an on-line assessment system which can be completed by managers and owners to self-assess their buildings. This training course is only available to existing BREEAM Assessors, BRE Global accredited Non Domestic EPC, and DEC assessors currently exclusively registered with BRE schemes.
There are two levels of qualification:

BREEAM In-Use certificate is currently only available for assessments made against UK based assets. BREEAM In-Use International is currently under development and will be available shortly. At present international assessments can recieve an indicative rating.
